Passage: Romans 3:27-4:25

Key Verse: Romans 3:27 NKJV

“Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.”

Good morning, friends.

It’s human nature to want credit for the good things we do. Whether it’s working hard, being generous, or living morally, there’s a subtle temptation to believe we’ve earned something from God. But Paul dismantles that idea. In this sweeping section of Romans, he makes something crystal clear: salvation is never earned, it’s received through faith.

Paul starts by asking a blunt question: “Where is boasting?” And then answers it with bold certainty: “It is excluded.” Why? Because the righteousness we need doesn’t come from our ability to obey the law, it comes by believing in the One who fulfilled it for us. Faith in Jesus shuts the door on pride and opens the way to grace.

To drive his point home, Paul reaches back to Abraham. Even the father of Israel wasn’t justified by works. He believed God and that trust was counted as righteousness (Romans 4:3). David, too, understood this when he spoke of the joy of having sin forgiven, apart from any merit. This righteousness isn’t a reward for performance; it’s a gift to the one who trusts.

The beauty of this passage is how it levels the playing field. Jew and Gentile, saint and sinner, young in faith or seasoned in years, every single person stands before God on the same terms: not by striving, but by believing. That was true for Abraham. It’s true for us.

Faith doesn’t put us on a pedestal—it puts us on our knees, grateful.

Today’s Reflection:

Are there ways I’ve subtly tried to earn God’s favor, or sought to feel “better than” others spiritually? What would it look like to rest in grace and extend that same grace to others?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You that my standing with You isn’t based on my effort, but on Your promise. Teach me to rest in that truth. Keep me from pride, and help me to walk humbly, trusting in Your righteousness alone. May my life reflect the joy and freedom of one who’s been forgiven, not one who’s trying to prove something. Amen.
