Passage: Romans 3:3–4 NKJV
“For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: 'That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.'”
Good morning, friends.
Paul is continuing his conversation about the unique role the Jewish people had in history. They were given the Law of God as more than a set of rules; it was meant to reveal God's character and show people how deeply they rely on Him. But not everyone lived faithfully to what they had been given. So, Paul asks the tough question: Does that mean God failed?
In today’s world, a lot of people wrestle with this same thought. If religious people act hypocritically, does that mean the message they carry is false? If someone you trusted misrepresented God, does that mean God can’t be trusted?
Paul answers that directly: Not at all! Just because some people walk away from the truth doesn’t make the truth any less true. God doesn’t become unfaithful just because people are. His character doesn’t change based on how well we represent Him.
While that idea may seem abstract at first, it speaks directly to our everyday experiences. God is true, which means we can rely on His promises. His love doesn't waver, and His justice doesn't change. When we or others fall short, His faithfulness remains the same.
Paul even quotes ancient Hebrew Scripture to make the point. In Psalm 51, King David confessed his sin and said to God, “That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.” David had failed badly, but he recognized that God was still right. Even if we try to argue our way out of guilt or justify our failures, God sees what’s real. His judgments are never flawed, and His truth will always stand up to scrutiny. We don’t need to be afraid of this—it’s actually an open invitation to be honest with God, to turn back to Him, and to rely on His mercy.
God’s truth remains steady, even when people fall short.
Today’s Reflection:
Have you ever felt like someone’s failure made it hard for you to trust God? What would it look like to bring that disappointment to Him and ask Him to show you what’s still true?
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for being faithful even when we are not. Sometimes it’s hard to separate who You are from the way others have acted in Your name. Help us see You clearly, not through the failures of people, but through the truth of Your Word and the life of Jesus. Teach us to trust You again. In His name we pray, Amen.
